City of Paris Gender equality and the fight against violence: what are the existing mechanisms?

A set of places exist in Paris to promote women's rights, help them to integrate professionally and support victims of domestic violence.

The Audacious City, an address for gender equality

Open since March 2020, the Audacious City is a place dedicated to gender equality and the promotion of women's rights. In this former elementary school in the Vaugirard district (6th ) an ecosystem of feminist associations and solidarity initiatives is being organized. The city plays a relay role: it hosts feminist associations and events, organizes permanence and provides the benefit of its podcast studio. The Women's Foundation is in charge of the animation entrusted to it by the City of Paris.

The Maison des Femmes de Paris, a benevolent space of solidarity

In the heart of the 12th arrondissement , the Maison des Femmes de Paris welcomes, advises and supports women looking for information and a space where they can confide in and find help. It was in 1981 that the place was born to bring together feminist collectives. Formed today as an association, the Maison des femmes focuses on feminist initiatives and welcomes women who are victims of sexist, physical, psychological or economic violence. It is a single-sex space: the staff welcomes women without an appointment, listens to their stories and takes an interest in their requests. Members then try to find a program or structure that can meet everyone's needs.

Devices to promote professional integration

Although the activity rate of Parisian women is increasing, obstacles to their access to employment continue to be imposed on them. Breaks in professional careers due to maternity leave and parental leave, difficulty of access to certain male-dominated sectors, employability of women with low levels of qualification, etc. Inequalities also continue in the workplace: women are overrepresented in partial and unskilled jobs.

The Paris Observatory of Violence Against Women

Ville de Paris Egalité femmes-hommes et lutte contre les violences : quels sont les dispositifs existants ?

The Parisian Observatory of Violence Against Women (OPVF) was created in 2014. Its goal: to reveal the extent of the phenomenon and take action to put an end to it. The OPVF contributes to building an arsenal of protection for women victims of violence. It aims in particular to develop and perpetuate actions as well as new systems, to contribute to the effectiveness of public policies in order to reduce this violence. In consultation with its partners, the OPVF produces an annual inventory of violence against women in Paris. Find here the 2020 inventory of the Observatory.

“Stops” for women victims of violence

The integration solidarity space (ESI) Louise Labé (20th )

Opened in 1983 by the historic feminist Geneviève Devèze, Louise Labé is one of the very first structures intended for women victims of violence. With psychologists and specialized educators, they begin personal, social, professional and family reconstruction and receive legal aid.

Shelters for homeless women

The night stop of the 18th arrondissement town hall

Located in the former premises of the district court, a night stopover for women opened its doors in December 2020 at the town hall of the 18th arrondissement . This place is managed by the Emmaüs Solidarité association.

The City Hall stop

The Town Hall has also had a rest stop since December 2018. About fifty women can sleep there.

A day reception at the Carreau du Temple (3 rd )

An extension of the “Halte femmes” in the 12th arrondissement , a day center reserved for homeless women, has opened its doors in the Carreau du Temple (3rd arrondissement ).

The city of ladies

The associations ADSF – Acting for Women's Health and the Salvation Army Foundation have joined forces to offer unconditional support to single women in situations of exclusion and vulnerability in the 13th arrondissement .
