Risky makeup for pregnant women: an alert association

The report of the investigation conducted by Wecf France is damning. After a rigorous inspection of the components of around fifty cosmetic products frequently used by women (17 BB creams, 15 mascaras and 15 concealers), which she obtained from perfumeries, organic stores, supermarkets and drugstores or pharmacies, the ecofeminist association reveals that it has detected no less than 37 problematic substances, although not prohibited on French territory.

They were classified into 3 categories: very worrying, worrying, somewhat worrying. There are thus endocrine disruptors, not recommended for pregnant women, 7 of which appear in the 13 substances "of very concern", "often present in a mixture". But also around fifty plastic ingredients in a significant number of the products observed, nanoparticles and allergens.

Health issues for pregnant women

“Makeup products are used daily by many women, including pregnant women, or those planning to become pregnant,” recalls Wecf in its report. "They are part of everyday consumer products that contribute to the exposure of the future mother and the unborn child to substances that can sometimes be problematic for health, such as potential endocrine disruptors."

Interviewed by La Maison des Maternelles, Dr Véronique Bied Damon, gynecologist specializing in assisted reproduction techniques, their action and effects: "During pregnancy, endocrine disruptors will act on the modulation of the expression of the genes of the embryo: certain genes will be more or less active depending on exposure to certain endocrine disruptors. The consequence is in particular the occurrence of pathologies in adulthood (cancer, infertility, etc.).

The most critical category: BB creams, these tinted moisturizing creams that are applied as a base on the skin. "Of the 17 examined, 6 contain at least 10 problematic substances", notes the association. "10 BB creams contain at least 5 substances of very high concern or concern." Among the mascaras studied, on the other hand, "none of the 15 mascaras in our survey contains more than 4 problematic substances. 3 references do not contain any problematic substance."

Unsurprisingly, it is the organic products that pass the examination without too much difficulty, "being mainly concerned with the problem of titanium dioxide (worrying) and rather worrying perfume allergens."

Suspicious ingredients that remain authorized

For the Wecf France association, it is urgent to regulate more strictly the sale and use of many cosmetic components, as well as better identification of the most worrying on the packaging (using logos for example). The organization highlights in particular the slowness of government decisions and, like the work of French health agencies or the European Chemicals Agency that the study took into account, comes to the conclusion that suspect ingredients remain authorized.

It is necessary "to speed up the regulation by the European Union of the 28 proven or suspected endocrine disruptors used in cosmetics and identified by it as priorities", insists Wecf. "For a year, progress has not been sufficient." The question remains: when will there be more control and consideration of the dangers of these formulas, which are mainly used by women?
