“Family is terrifying”, Kate Dolan tells us Samhain, her masterstroke

Her film Samhain, about the transfer of a depressed mother and school bullying, is our favorite in the official competition of the 2022 Gérardmer festival. Kate Dolan, laughing and natural, tells us how much her film is intimate and evokes his relationship to the folklore of his native Ireland.

Thursday, January 27, Samhain, You Are Not My Mother was screened at the cinema bordering Lake Gérardmer, where the few mallards snort not to be discouraged by the seasonal frost.

To the applause of an audience who came to tremble en masse, the director, Kate Dolan, presented her film in a French that was admittedly hesitant but completely irresistible.

At her request, the technicians turned the main room back on so that Kate could take a selfie with all the heads, wearing anti-otitis toupees, who had come to discover her first feature film.

Kate Dolan, warm storyteller

At the end of the film, Kate had disappeared, no doubt swallowed up by the night that fascinates her, and did not reappear until the next day, at the bar of the Grand Hotel de Gérardmer, wearing a cap.

Without any shyness, Kate detailed her film intentions, evoked the intimacy that binds her to Samhain and sang the legends of her native Ireland.

Her benevolent warmth has melted some of the city's frost, and increased our admiration for her. She who, like other directors selected before her at Gérardmer, hits hard from her first attempt.

Madmoizelle: Samhain is a splendid fresco of Irish folklore, but it is also the merciless portrait of a depressed mother and a bullied child. What are the origins of this intimate drama?
