Mascara, blush, foundation: how long should you keep your cosmetics?

1/ Powders (eyeshadow, blush, bronzer...)

Shelf life: 12 to 24 months.Powders are waterless products that remain on the upper layer of our skin, therefore they can be used up to 2 years after opening. Nevertheless, the brushes with which these products are applied must be cleaned to avoid the transfer of impurities from the face.

2/ Liquid and cream products (foundation, eyeshadow, concealer, blush, highlighter...)

Shelf life: 6 to 12 months.Liquid products have a limited lifespan due to their composition. Formulated with water, they generally keep for 6 months, beyond which the risk of microbial contamination is increased. For those in contact with the mucous membranes, it is better not to play extra time to avoid infections and irritations.

3/ Eyeliner

Lifespan: 3 months. In direct contact with the mucous membranes of our eyes, it is crucial to discard your eyeliner on time to avoid any infection ocular. Just like our makeup brushes, liners are breeding grounds for bacteria on which dead skin, sebum and other impurities settle. Except that it is impossible to clean it! Result: the product clogs up and becomes dangerous.

4/ Pencils (eyes, lips, eyebrows...)

Shelf life: 2 years. Also formulated without water, pencils are cosmetics that keep for a long time. On the other hand, since they also come into contact with the eyes and the mouth, it is better to regularly cut or clean the mine in order to prevent bacteria from settling there.

5/ Mascara

Shelf life: 3 months. For the same reason as eyeliner, mascara should be thrown away as soon as the use-by date expires.

6/ Lipstick

Shelf life: 15 months. Properly cared for, a tube of lipstick can be kept for a long time; it is above all the texture that will decide whether or not to get rid of it, since it can become drying and uncomfortable.
