Which face mask for which skin? - Marie Claire Belgium

How does a mask work on the skin?

The face mask is a treatment that can treat skin problems. Concentrated in active ingredients, it facilitates the repair of the hydrolipidic film. The surface of the skin is covered by an emulsion of water and fat which creates a protective barrier and helps to soften it.

Applying a mask should be done in a thick layer and avoiding the eye area. For the active ingredients to penetrate well, it is generally necessary to leave to act for 15 to 20 minutes. For optimal effectiveness, one mask should be made per week. However, there are no imposed rules and it is all about knowing when the epidermis needs it. It will also depend on the type of skin you have.

Choose your mask according to your skin

The moisturizing mask deeply nourishes the epidermis and it is important to choose it with lipids and moisturizing active ingredients, such as acid hyaluronic. It must also contain fatty active ingredients such as shea butter or avocado, which nourishes the epidermis. Dry and sensitive skin will need a mask enriched with floral or thermal water.

COMBINATION SKIN, OPT FOR MULTI-MASKING

If you have so-called combination skin, multi-masking is for you. It regulates sebum and deeply hydrates the epidermis. Choose a treatment that mattifies the T zone, in other words the middle zone of your face which covers the forehead, nose and chin. It should be rebalancing to gently purify the skin. Ideally, it should be composed of fatty active ingredients, such as vegetable oils or clay.

If you are one of the women with oily skin, you should consider a green clay mask. It will regulate and absorb excess sebum while purifying your epidermis. Also take care to choose one that contains moisturizing active ingredients, so as not to dry out your face. And in case you have blackheads, make masks based on white clay or zinc.

What are the different types of masks?

There are different types of masks. Creamy, for example, is suitable for all skin types and using it in winter is ideal. It is used to soften and nourish the epidermis. The gel mask, on the other hand, has a melting and fresh texture which makes it an ally for dehydrated skin. It restores their radiance and soothes them. Finally, the earthy mask. It consists mainly of clay and is intended for oily skin. It helps fight comedones and can be applied to the T zone in case you have combination skin.

What to do before applying a mask?

Before applying a mask, it is important to thoroughly cleanse your skin, which must be rid of all impurities. For this, you can use a soap and rinse with clear water to leave no residue. Also take the time to gently exfoliate the skin.

This point will optimize the action of the mask and facilitate skin renewal. To do this, the trick is to mix a tablespoon of grated coconut oil with half a teaspoon of oil. Alternatively, use a sponge when cleaning.
