Probiotics improve nausea during pregnancy

Nausea and vomiting affect about 85% of pregnant women during the first weeks of pregnancy. This phenomenon is largely due to the increase in hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone), and can have major social and health repercussions. However, there is a simple remedy to fight against this nausea, suggests a new study published in the journal Nutrients: probiotics.

We already know the benefits of these "good" bacteria found in yoghurts, fermented foods or food supplements: strengthening of immune defences, regulation of intestinal transit, or even the fight against depression or cancer. Researchers administered probiotics containing primarily Lactobacillus twice a day to 32 participants for 16 days, and they saw a significant decrease in their nausea and vomiting, according to the study. Probiotic intake also reduced other symptoms related to quality of life, such as fatigue, lack of appetite or the ability to maintain a social life.

The study also identified new gut microbes associated with vomiting, such as Akkermansia and A. muciniphila (which are significantly reduced by taking probiotics). The researchers also found that vitamin E levels were higher after taking probiotics, which again could explain the decrease in nausea.
