Obesity unevenly affects social circles

Obesity [1] is almost twice as widespread in the most modest categories (18 % among workers and employees) than in easier categories (10 % among senior managers), depending on the 2020 editionObepi-Roche study [2].In twenty years, the share of obese people among all adults has increased by almost seven points, going from 10 % in 2000 to 17 % in 2020.Today, nearly 8.6 million people are affected. The increase in the frequency of obesity has affected women as much as men, as well as all age groups, according to this study.

In the same way, all social circles have increased in the proportion of obese adults during this period. However, the extension of obesity is limited to 2.5 additional points in 20 years in senior executives, while it is nine points among employees and eight points among workers.Social inequalities have therefore increased over the period: if the workers were barely 1.5 times more concerned in 2000 than the senior executives, this report reached twice as in 2020.

The social environment is in fact strongly contributed to the determination of obesity. The previous study, conducted in 2012, first showed the importance of income: at that time, more than 25 % of adults living in a home with monthly income less than 900 euros per month were obese, against 7 % of thosewhich had 5,300 euros and more. The level of diploma has also been highlighted. The obesity rate was three times higher in people at a level of education equivalent to that of primary school in 2012 (24.5 %) than among doctorate graduates (7.3 %).

L’obésité touche de manière inégale les milieux sociaux

Corpulence is partly a question of bodily social standards (see box). But obesity is also a disease that leads to sometimes dramatic consequences for those who are victims.Eating practices, the attention paid to the body and in particular to thinness are not the same depending on the social circles.Practicing a sport, having a diversified and healthy diet, regularly consult a doctor, etc..limit the risk of becoming obese. In the end of genetic factors combine with lifestyles to explain obesity.
